What is Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy is an evidenced based approach to psychological and physical health problems. It is recommended in the NICE guidelines (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) for psychological and physical health problems.

You will work collaboratively in a safe trusting therapeutic relationship with your psychotherapist on the areas that are causing you distress and that you want to work on. This approach working on past and present events and factors will explore ways you feel and think and discuss areas of your life, you may wish to change.

The approach generally focuses on situations in the present, but will also draw on the past and on past experiences where these are relevant to the current problem. The main focus of Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy is to help individuals, families or couples develop knowledge, understanding and coping strategies to bring about changes in behaviour and thinking, in order to alleviate symptoms and enable people to address and manage problems and build resilience. You will be enabled and empowered to understand how emotions, thoughts, physical symptoms and behaviours are interconnected and influenced by past and present experiences and contexts.
